STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST AWARD
For the best paper
written in any area of women's concerns in any
discipline
Eligibility: Papers written by UNC Charlotte
Students during the previous calendar year.
Students who have recently graduated are still
eligible to submit papers.
Award: $100, presented at the Women's Leadership
Contest in March.
Judges: Three faculty members from different
disciplines.
Deadline: Late January or early February. Check
with the Women's Studies Program Office for this year's deadline.
Submission instructions: Submit four copies of
the paper to the Women's Studie Program Office,
c/o Interdisciplinary Studies, Macy Building.
Each copy of the paper should have a title sheet
without the author's name. The entire bundle
should have a single cover sheet with the
author's name, address, telephone number, email
address (if applicable), and student i.d. number.
The essay contest is jointly sponsored by the
Women's Studies Program and the Dean of Students
Office.
The 1998 winners are:
Meredith Oyen, "She Whom God Calls: The Relationship Between
Motherhood and Ministry in the Nineteenth-Century American
Methodist Church."
Lisa Singleton, "To Be 'King' is Better Than To Be 'Queen': The
Acquisition of Gendered Meaning Through Language."
Merit
Scholarship in Women's Studies
Award:
$500 towards UNCC tuition and fees.
One scholarship per year, announced in fall
semester and to be used in spring semester, will
be awarded.
Eligibility
Requirements:
1. Declared Women's Studies minor.
2. At least second semester sophomore standing.
3. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5.
Criteria for
Awarding Fellowship:
The Women's Studies Scholarship Committee will
take all of the following into consideration:
applicants' academic achievement, involvement in
women's issues, and financial need.
Application
Deadline: November 15, 1996 for
Spring semester 1997 scholarship. The Scholarship
Committee's decision will be announced no later
than December 15, 1996.
Instructions to
Applicants:
A completed application consists of the following
materials:
1. Cover sheet with full name, address, telephone
number (fax or email optional), student i.d.
number and the names, titles, addresses and
telephone numbers of the people from whom you
have requested letters of reference.
2. Personal essay of 300-500 words describing
your interest and involvement in women's studies,
or issues.
3. Three letters of reference. At least one must
be from a faculty member at UNCC. These letters
should evaluate your academic achievement,
interest & involvement in women's issues, and
other strengths.
4. An official transcript from UNC Charlotte and
other colleges or universities you have attended.
All items must be typed, as handwritten
applications will not be considered. Items 1 and
2 should be submitted by you to the Women's
Studies Coordinator. Item 3 should be sent by the
referees directly to the Women's Studies
Coordinator. Item 4 should be sent by the
registrar's office(s) directly to the Women's
Studies Coordinator.

PROGRAM NEWS
Interdisciplinary Studies Office renovations
in the Macy building are underway. For the next
several months, the Women's Studies Program
Office will be located on the second floor of
Macy. The phone number is the same.
Watch for the Women's Leadership Conference on
Saturday March 1, 1997 --- kicking off Women's
History Month!
Remember to submit nominations for UNCC Women of
the Year when the call for nominations comes your
way. You can nominate outstanding women in the
following categories: faculty, professional
staff, support staff, student, community memnber.
Nominations are due February 14.
This coming summer and fall, we are offering an
unprecedented variety of elective courses, as
well as our usual slew of writing-intensive
courses. In summer, watch for "Working
Women/Women in Business" and
"Philosophy of Love and Sex." In fall,
watch for the 3000-level "Women's
Perspectives in Literature," "Women and
Peacebuilding," "Feminist
Philosophy," "Contemporary German Women
Writers," and the 4000-level "Women in
Education," and "Women
Anthropologists."
The Women's Studies Program faculty is gradually
evolving from a group of junior-level faculty to
a group of senior level faculty. Deborah Ryan and
Ann Newman have been recommended by their Deans
for promotion to Associate Professor; Laura Duhan
Kaplan has been recommended by her Dean for
tenure and promotion to Associate Professor.
POSITION
ANNOUNCEMENTS IN WOMEN'S STUDIES AND RELATED
FIELDS
The Women's Studies Program at Oberlin College
seeks qualified candidates for a continuing
position at the assistant professor level, to
begin August 1997. Candidates should have a
strong focus on issues of feminist theory and
methodology and specialize either in the social
sciences or in cultural studies with a social
science orientation. For information contact

De Pauw University seeks a one-year full-time
leave replacement for its Women's Studies
Coordinator. This is a joint appointment between
Women's Studies and another department (field
open). Half the job involves teaching three
courses per year, the other half is
administrative, including
coordination of courses, advising majors and
minors, planning and execution of public events,
faculty development and assessment. Send a letter

SEWSA (South Eastern Women's Studies Association)
Student Awards for Outstanding Scholarship on
Women of Color. Two awards of $200 each will be
presented at the 1997 SEWSA Conference in Athens,
Georgia for one undergraduate and one graduate
student paper given at either the 1996 or 1997
conference. To be considered for an award, the
paper must be based on the original research (in
any field) of a woman of color and address women
of color. To be considered for the award, two
copies of the FINISHED paper must be submitted by

OPERATION CROSSROADS aims to involve North
Americans in sustainable development efforts in
Africa and Brazil and is looking for project
directors, interns and volunteers for summer
