Traveling to Charlotte
Welcome to Charlotte, also known as the Queen City. We are the banking and business center of North Carolina. Charlotte is easily accessible by air, train or car. The city is served by Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (airport code CLT). Since Charlotte is a USAir hub (USAirways.com) it is easy to fly here. We are also served by Amtrak (Amtrack.com), with a station in the middle of the city. Finally, our location at the intersection of Interstate I-77 and I-85 makes it easy to drive to Charlotte.
- If you are flying or taking a train to the conference, UNC Charlotte is about 16 miles from Charlotte-Douglas International airport. The campus is about 10 miles from the N. Tyron Amtrak station. Estimated cab fare is $25-35 one-way.
- If you are driving to the conference, you can look up directions at http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.adp.
- The Drury Inn and Suites’ address is 415 West W.T. Harris Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28262.

Traveling to UNC Charlotte
The Women’s Studies Program welcomes you to UNC Charlotte, home of the 49er’s. The conference is being hosted at the main campus (located in northeastern Charlotte) on the first floor of the Cone University Center. The UNC Charlotte campus sits amidst 1,000 acres of wooded hills, fields of lawn, and preserved green space an appealing environment of modern building quads and lighted walking paths, commingled with gardens and ponds. There are two options for getting to UNC Charlotte.
- Shuttle Service: There will be a free shuttle available to transport registered conference attendees between the Drury Inn Suites (the conference hotel) and UNC Charlotte. Shuttle service will be available throughout the conference and we encourage attendees to take advantage of this service.
- Parking on UNCC Campus: The conference hotel is located approximately 2 miles from the UNC Charlotte campus. If you drive to campus park in the visitor section of the Cone Parking Deck. There will be signs from the main University City Blvd. entrance directing you to this parking deck. There is an hourly charge for visitor parking on Thursday and Friday (parking is free on Saturday). The maximum amount you will be charged will be $6.
Things to do while you are in Charlotte:
Paramount's Carowinds Water and Theme Park is a full day of excitement for kids as well as adults. Roller coasters, great food, concerts and much more. The theme park features water-theme rides and activities to cool off during the hot Carolina days. The Victory Lane Indoor Karting Center provides hours of go-kart fun then it's off to the Charlotte Nature Museum or Discovery Place, where science and fun are synonymous.
Love museums? See the Charlotte Museum of History, Mint Museum of Craft and Design, Mint Museum of Art, The Levine Museum of the New South, The Conde-Charlotte Museum or the Charlotte Museum and Folk Society. Other great stops are the McDowell Nature Center and Preserve, The University of North Carolina Botanical Gardens, the Rosedale Plantation and the Afro-American Cultural Center.
Charlotte really comes to life at night when the clubs, bands and bars hip-hop or rock and roll. Visit unique spots like 300 East, 8 Track, 42nd Street, AK&W Lounge, or The Sunset Club. And there are hundreds of great restaurants from fast food joints to candlelight dinner establishments.
